Satori is a Zen term for sudden enlightenment. Mine was sensing the coming of my own mortality.
I left home at 18 for the U.S. Navy and served on submarines. Then came four decades of work: thirty years at one company, then in 2024 a move to become CEO of another. Somewhere along the way work became my identity. Retirement is coming sooner rather than later, and I’ve begun asking what the years after it are for.
This is where I work that out.
What you’ll find here
Mortality. What changes when you stop assuming you have time.
Faith. I’m Catholic, and Scripture runs through much of what I write.
A code. Precepts drawn from the Stoics, Musashi, my father, the Navy and the boardroom. Rules decided in advance, so I don’t have to reason them out under pressure.
Living. Kettlebells, a motorcycle, a small circle of family and friends.
Who it’s for
Men in the back half of life asking the same questions. Younger men who want forty years of lessons, mistakes included. Anyone looking for company on the harder road.
I’m not judging you. I’m not better than you. If my mistakes can help you avoid your own, take them.
I publish when I have something to say. Subscribe and it arrives in your inbox, free.
Satori!
